Cartoonists - 16 days to submit your Olympic Art idea

YOU’VE PROBABLY noticed that there are going to be some Olympics in the UK in 2012.

What you may not have noticed is that there is a great big feck-off Arts competition associated with it - and the submission date for ideas (not the artwork itself!) is just over 2 weeks away on the 29th May 2009!

The website is here: artists taking the lead, and below is what they’re looking for in essence (some is my summarising, so check the website):

What they’re looking for:

  • Original ideas for projects in any artform, led by artists (from individuals to collectives or organisations).
  • Projects that reflect and are inspired by the location in which they will take shape.
  • Projects which will be completed by June 2012, but also show a legacy for artists and communities beyond 2012.
  • Projects that celebrate London 2012 and reflect the values and vision of the Cultural Olympiad, the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.

What they’re offering artists:

  • nine commissions of up to £500,000, one in each of the English regions
  • a development grant of up to £5,000 for each of the shortlisted artists, to turn their ideas into finished proposals
  • the chance to be profiled in the national campaign promoting the 12 commissions as the best of our nation’s creativity

What they need from you in the first place:

  • They would like you, in 400 words,  to describe your idea for the commission, considering how it meets the four core aims of the project. You do not need to include budgetary or logistical details as they will ask shortlisted artists to develop these at a later stage.

So, what are you waiting for?!

Cartoons are just perfect for a concept like this!  If you have ideas, but don’t want to do it yourself, or don’t fit the criteria, put your ideas into the comments section for someone else to think over.  16 days is more than enough time to come up with a concept in 400 words; don’t let it drip away.
