London Cartoon Festival - Current Status

WE’RE JUST chilling out at the moment, quietly investigating potential sponsors and exploring ideas for festival content. No news is good news as they say although we will welcome any general news from the cartooning world. Send your stories to Simon.

In October I will be going to the St Just-le-Martel cartoon festival in Limoges, SW France and will bring back a full report.

The next London Cartoon Festival Meeting will be Tuesday November 3rd, but this is subject to change.

All Change! London Cartoon Festival developments–Glass half full!

AFTER A SUMMER hiatus of rest and reflection, the wood became clearer from the trees. The absence of a commercially-minded sponsorship manager looked like a gaping hole in the London Cartoon Festival plans. Fortunately, this hole has been amply filled by the arrival of knight in shining armour in the shape of Roger Wilsher of Abstract Associates. Roger is just one of many business-minded individuals who believes the London Cartoon Festival will be a success. And he is prepared to put his money where his mouth is. By funding three months of his Sales Director, Lesley Churchill’s time to go out and drag back the sponsors that we need he is placing a great deal of trust and optimism into the event which is positively inspiring.

The next change has been a review of our venue. Whilst Kings Place is the ultimate in luxury and state-of-the-art facilities, its positioning along with a number of other niggling disadvantages made us revisit our number two on the list: The Camden Centre on Euston Road.

We feel that the Camden Centre offers all we need more cost-effectively and its position in the middle a confluence of major transport routes into London make it a surefire winner for walk-by visitors to the London Cartoon Festival.

Look how well placed the Camden Centre is for our thousands of visitors!

With these changes and the additional possibility of Derren Brown auctioning some of his caricatures on behalf of our charity, War Child, The London Cartoon Festival can dare to consider the glass half full!

Sponsorship Manager sought!

WITH THE SILLY season of August drawing to a close and with movers and shakers returning from Tuscany and the Algarve to their desks, I have started the process of looking for a new SponsorshipManager/Project Manager.

ABOVE: Who knows what my new Sponsorship Manager will look like?

I will be meeting one tomorrow who comes with high recommendation from an old friend and publishing colleague of mine but would like to hear from anyone who thinks they could help.

The task is one replete with stops, starts, irritating red tape, bureaucracy and petty politics. It requires the knowledge and copywriting skills to get under the skin and actual wants and desires of prospective sponsors and the staying power to plough this lonely furrow until the task is complete.

Cartoons by Bill Stott

(Click on each image to enlarge and then click again for extra detail.)

BILL HAS A DEGREE in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking and a post graduate teaching degree. Due to a typographical error, he is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

During teaching in and around Liverpool, the funniest city in the whole of Merseyside, he began a parallel career as a cartoonist and was first published in Punch in the late 70s – an association which lasted up to the magazine’s sad demise some 20 years later.

In that time he has worked [and works] for a very wide variety of publications including the Times Educational Supplement, with Libby Purves – Private Eye [when Mr Hislop’s on holiday], major publishers such as Collins and Emap, educational publishers, and celebrated specialist mags like “Classic Plant and Machinery” [honest]. He’s also a regular in the motoring press. Much of his work is editorial – illustrating magazine and newspaper articles. He’s fast and accurate.

He has his own ongoing range of cartoon books and calendars via Helen Exley Gift Books looking at the absurdities of Golf Soccer Rugby, Marriage, Sex, Cats, Mobile phones, Computers, Over 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. He also produces calendars for Moments Calendars and Diaries.

Because of his deep practical knowledge of teaching and the challenges of education generally, and the fact that underneath and despite government initiatives and buzz words, schools can be very funny, he is also able to offer unique after dinner presentations which feature at least 25 – 30 big on the spot cartoons. He is a regular on the Educational Conference circuit. He also speaks [and draws] at non-educational functions.
